Summer has finally arrived!  While out enjoying this warm weather and all that Montana has to offer, keep your pet's safety in mind.  This time of year we see many different types of injuries.

Many dogs are bitten each year by snakes when out hiking with their owners.  If your dog hasn't already gotten a rattlesnake vaccination, call and ask about it today.  Also during this hot weather it's easy for your pet to overheat.  While many people think placing their dog into a stream to cool them down helps, it actually can send your dog into shock.  Their tempurature needs to be brought down slowly.  Overheating can be very dangerous to your pet and they should be brought in to the clinic immediately.

Thunderstorms and fireworks are a major problem for many pets.  Unfortunately many pets run away during storms or fireworks and are not found.  Make sure you have identification on your pets at all times and talk with your veterinarian about medications that can help your pet in stressful situations.

Finally, please don't allow your dog to ride in the back of trucks.  They may "enjoy" it, but there are many dangers simply from falling or jumping out, to the heat that truck beds generate.  Make this summer a safe and fun one for both you and your pet!

Check out the Friday edition of the Belgrade News each week!  Our very own Dr. Debbie Joiner is writing a new feature each week in the "Ask the Vet" column.  If you have any questions you would like to see addressed in the column, please let us know!
